Dans la cérémonie des funérailles, le cadavre des grands personnages était posé sur une sorte de lit de parade rappelant le solium (trône royal) et qui en reçut le nom. On en vint, par extension, à désigner le tombeau lui-même par ce nom de solium. Dans les catacombes, le travail d'excavation exigeait de creuser une tranchée ensuite creusée en forme d'arc, d'où le nom d'arcosolium. Cet arcosolium est constitué d'une tombe surmontée d'une voûte cintrée. Tombe et voûte portent un décor. La face verticale de la tombe est ornée de méandres sculptés entre lesquels apparaissent des fleurs de lys. La voussure de la voûte plein cintre est moulurée. Elle retombe sur des impostes moulurées. History
In the ceremony of funerals, the corpse of great personages was placed on a sort of ceremonial bed recalling the solium (royal throne) and which took its name from it. By extension, one came to designate the tomb itself by this name of solium. In the catacombs, the work of excavation required digging a trench then carved in the form of an arch, hence the name arcosolium. This arcosolium consists of a tomb surmounted by a barrel vault. Tomb and vault bear decoration. The vertical face of the tomb is ornamented with meanders carved between which appear fleurs de lys. The voussure of the barrel vault is moulded. It rests on moulded imposts. Above, the archivolt is moulded with returns.
