The seigneury of Ligondès, dependent on the castellany of Evaux, fell under the rule of the Dukes of Bourbon. The Ligondès, originally from Italy, established themselves in France around 1248. The elder branch made its residence of the castle built in the 13th century. Under the Revolution, the Marquis Georges du Ligondès emigrated. The castle was sold in the 19th century. The building is formed of a quadrangular main dwelling to which is attached, to the west, another body of building in a right-angle return. To the east, a square tower forming a donjon flanks the central building. The central main dwelling is the oldest part (14th century). At the north angle is found a small tower pierced with a gun port and carried on five corbels. At the level of the third storey, a bretèche is carried on three corbels separated by accolade arches. In the basement, the barrel-vaulted cellar is lit by a loophole. The third storey, under the roof structure, is defended by the bartizan and the bretèche, contemporary with the reworking of the 15th century. This construction appears to have originally been the quadrangular donjon with buttress of the original castle. The building in right-angle return would be of the same date as the central body. A small tower flanked the south angle. The square tower, donjon of the 15th century (around 1443), has four storeys and is flanked by an attached small tower. The work is crowned, on three faces, with a gallery of machicolations on corbelling. A first spiral staircase occupies the greater part of the tower, up to the second storey. On the second storey, it is replaced by a small spiral staircase housed in an attached small tower. The third storey is occupied by a barrel-vaulted room, adorned with an accolade fireplace (former chapel). The original access to the tower was on the first storey from the rear. The first entrance to the castle, with its drawbridge, must have been located towards the south end of the building in right-angle return.
