Historique
Bellegarde est une bastide qui a été fondée au 13e siècle. Cette tour, qui flanquait la porte ouest de la ville, est le seul reste de l'enceinte de la bastide. Elle est de forme semi-circulaire, arrondie sur l'extérieur, présentant sur l'intérieur une façade rectiligne. Elle conserve, au nord, la feuillure sur laquelle battait la porte de la ville. De l'appareil de défense ne subsistent que deux archères dont l'une, en croix, surmonte une canonnière ronde. A côté est creusée une petite niche sous laquelle se lit l'année 1650, date probable d'une réfection partielle consécutive, peut-être, à la suppression des créneaux et mâchicoulis. Ce couronnement a été remplacé par une toiture en poivrière terminée par un clocheton, le tout recouvert en bardeaux. Cette tour loge actuellement l'horloge municipale.

History
Bellegarde is a bastide which was founded in the 13th century. This tower, which flanked the west gate of the town, is the only remaining part of the bastide's enclosure. It is of semi-circular form, rounded on the exterior, presenting on the interior a rectilinear façade. It retains, to the north, the rebate on which the town gate shut. Of the defensive apparatus there remain only two arrow slits, one of which, in cross form, surmounts a round gun port. Beside it is carved a small niche below which is read the year 1650, the probable date of a partial repair perhaps consequent to the removal of the crenellations and machicolations. This crowning has been replaced by a roof with a pepperpot shape terminated by a small bell tower, the whole covered in shingles. This tower currently houses the municipal clock.
