Saint-Merd dépendait de l'ordre de Malte, représenté par le grand prieur d'Auvergne, commandeur de Bellechassagne. Celui-ci était curé primitif et collateur de son église, dîmier général de la paroisse et seigneur foncier, haut et bas justicier du bourg et d'une série de villages. Le presbytère, qui remonte au 17e siècle, est particulièrement caractéristique de l'architecture rurale du plateau de Millevaches, avec ses murs en granit du pays et les toitures à deux versants en chaume. History
Saint-Merd depended on the Order of Malta, represented by the grand prior of Auvergne, commander of Bellechassagne. He was the original curate and collator of his church, general tithe-taker of the parish and ground lord, high and low justiciar of the town and a series of villages. The presbytery, which dates from the 17th century, is particularly characteristic of the rural architecture of the Millevaches plateau, with its walls in local granite and the roof with two thatch slopes. The west gable preserves three projecting sculpted stones (reused). It is completed by a closed garden, characteristic, with its stone well.
