The modernisation of the Briare canal became essential due to the creation of the lateral canal to the Loire, completed in 1838, which revived navigation in the Loire valley. Besides bringing it to Freycinet gauge and improving water supply, the passage into the Loire, laid out at the beginning of the 19th century by a double submersible dyke at the height of Châtillon-sur-Loire, was replaced by a direct passage between the two canals thanks to the aqueduct. This, one of the best-known engineering works in river navigation, is the largest metallic aqueduct in France. The present site of the aqueduct consists - besides the aqueduct itself - of two lock-keeper's houses situated on either side of the entrance to the canal towards Briare, preceded by a metal bridge allowing passage over the canal and pairs of guard gates situated at the lower level, at each extremity, towards Briare and towards Saint-Firmin. The aqueduct was built from 1890 by the contractors Eiffel for the foundations and masonry structure, Daydé and Pillé for the installation of the metal structure, under the direction of the Ponts et Chaussées engineer of Nevers, Mazoyer. The construction site was completed in 1895 by the electrical installation: electric lighting was still virtually unknown at that time. The aqueduct consists of fifteen bays of a metal U-shaped caisson supporting a basin forming a trough and resting on masonry piers. It measures 662 metres in total and is bordered by walkways built in overhang.
