History
The fortifications date from the end of the 7th century, a surrounding wall being mentioned in the charters of this period. In 1090 work on the fortifications is mentioned. There remain currently, besides the fossae, six turrets or remains of towers, to the south-west and north-east. All these towers have been more or less dismantled and transformed into utilitarian buildings. These are towers of rubble stone masonry, with horizontal arrow slits in stone. The gate must have been furnished with defensive crenellations. Two towers stood to the right of the gate, and two others to the left. Near the gate of Gâtines is found an underground passage in a horseshoe shape which must have communicated with the château des Forges.
