Château bâti à la place d'un édifice plus ancien. En 1506, il passe aux mains de François du Plessis, arrière grand-père du cardinal de Richelieu. Le Chillou fit partie du domaine érigé en duché en 1631, en faveur du ministre de Louis XIII. Les ducs de Richelieu le possédèrent jusqu'en 1805. Entouré de douves, le château comprenait quatre corps de bâtiments limitant chacun un côté d'une cour intérieure rectangulaire. Au sud, la porte fortifiée est élevée sur plan carré et flanquée sur deux angles d'une tourelle cylindrique couronnée de mâchicoulis. A l'est, la porte est reliée par une tour d'escalier en retrait, à la grosse tour d'angle sud-est. Le corps de logis oriental réunit cette tour à celle de l'angle nord-est. Le bâtiment nord comprend la chapelle. L'angle nord-ouest est occupé par une grosse tour qui fut ou est devenu le pigeonnier. Le bâtiment ouest aboutissait à une tour qui a disparu. Sous la cour se trouvent des souterrains dont les galeries multiples se prolongent très loin.

History
Castle built in place of an older building. In 1506, it passed into the hands of François du Plessis, great-grandfather of Cardinal Richelieu. Le Chillou was part of the domain erected into a duchy in 1631, in favor of the minister of Louis XIII. The dukes of Richelieu possessed it until 1805. Surrounded by a moat, the castle comprised four bodies of buildings each limiting one side of a rectangular interior court. To the south, the fortified gate is raised on a square plan and flanked on two angles by a cylindrical turret crowned with machicolations. To the east, the gate is connected by a recessed staircase tower to the large south-east corner tower. The eastern dwelling block connects this tower to that of the north-east angle. The northern building includes the chapel. The north-west angle is occupied by a large tower which was or became the dovecot. The western building ended in a tower which has disappeared. Beneath the court are found dungeons whose multiple galleries extend very far.
