Historique
Contebault relevait pour moitié de la collégiale de Candes, et pour moitié de celle de Saint-Mexme à Chinon. Un manoir primitif, élevé au 16e siècle, comprenait deux ailes perpendiculaires. Les angles nord-est et nord-ouest portent une tourelle cylindrique en encorbellement. Au 17e siècle fut ajouté, à l'angle sud-est du bâtiment principal, un bâtiment carré accompagné d'une tour carrée. Une tour d'escalier cylindrique couverte d'un dôme fut montée dans l'angle rentrant. Jean Ribotteau projetait de transformer son manoir en un château régulier flanqué de pavillons aux angles ; le commanditaire, ruiné, n'ayant pu achever son oeuvre, seule une moitié a été réalisée.

History
Contebault was dependent for one half on the collegiate church of Candes, and for one half on that of Saint-Mexme in Chinon. A primitive manor house, raised in the 16th century, comprised two perpendicular wings. The north-east and north-west angles bear a cylindrical corbelled turret. In the 17th century there was added, at the south-east angle of the main building, a square building accompanied by a square tower. A cylindrical staircase tower covered with a dome was erected in the re-entrant angle. Jean Ribotteau planned to transform his manor into a regular château flanked by pavilions at the angles; the patron, ruined, not having been able to complete his work, only one half was realised.
