Historique

History
The château of Grand-Pressigny overlooks the valley of the Claise. There remain from it a half-collapsed quadrangular keep of the 12th century, a vast enclosure largely of the 13th century, part of the Renaissance main dwelling (the gallery) built towards 1560 as well as the Vironne tower. The Marquis de Villars, Honorat de Savoie, had a park of more than 30 hectares enclosed by walls laid out, which has left virtually no trace in the topography of the place. Only remain the fountain of the Ferrus, a kind of circular basin surrounding a spring, and the nymphaeum of Renaissance architecture, today concealed in a small copse. This small building of the early 17th century, carefully built with almost invisible joints and with refined decoration of rusticated bosses, is one of the oldest testimonies of water architecture and garden design. Its curved facade with a composition in the form of a triumphal arch is ornamented with cartouches bearing the initials of Savoie-Villars. In the interior, the walls are carved with seven niches ornamented with shells separated by pilasters which support a ribbed dome with eight facets.
