A castellany subject to the seigniory of Montsoreau, the castle passed in 1330 to the house of Du Bellay, who built the present building. The first fortress was completed in 1415. The castle is preceded by a courtyard of honour and ornamental gardens which slope down towards a meadow bounded on three sides by moats and where the entrance is located. To the left are developed the outbuildings; to the right, a terrace bounded by an old enclosure wall, then the great canal. On the edge of the service courtyard is found a cylindrical tower with machicolations, a remnant of the 14th-century fortress. The castle comprises a central main dwelling and two wings at right angles on the courtyard of honour with, in the re-entrant angles, two polygonal towers of spiral stairs. A building erected at roughly the same period on the edge of the south terrace is terminated by a higher rectangular pavilion, used for the lodging of farmers. Another 18th-century building connects the latter to the main body. To the north are found the outbuildings with a large courtyard, two bodies of building at right angles, and a secondary courtyard whose access is by a passage with a barrel vault opening in the axis of the main building. Inside the castle, the ground floor preserves wainscoting of the 17th and 18th centuries. On the first floor, a room has preserved the wainscoting, ceiling and painted decoration from the period of construction. On the wainscoting alternate mythological scenes, flower bouquets and motifs bearing the monogram of the Du Bellay family. Similar decoration subsists in some rooms of the south wing and in the corridor that serves them. A large gallery entirely covered with paintings occupies the first floor of the 18th-century building in return towards the east. Represented are the royal castles, as well as the castle of Gizeux placed in parallel with these constructions.
