History

The château of Velor, designated in a charter of the 11th century, formed a fief held of Cravant and Beaumont. In 1598, the property passed for a time to the princes of Bourbon-Montpensier. Built in stone and brick in the 15th century, the château occupies the southern part of a rectangular terrace, surrounded by moats and preceded by a forecourt bounded to the east and west by outbuildings of the 18th century. It comprises a main building whose north façade is flanked by a polygonal stair turret. The gate is surmounted by an ogival arch and charged with arms. The south façade was remade in ashlar in the 18th century. Two wings in return at right angles, that of the west having been rebuilt in the 18th century. Two square pavilions occupy the northern corners of the courtyard of honour. That of the west contains the chapel; that of the east is assigned to a bathroom. A cylindrical dovecote of the 16th century survives to the north of the western outbuildings. A turret in brick and stone of the 15th century stands at the south-east angle of the enclosure.
