Historique

History
The domain was founded in the 13th century by donations to the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. Until the 16th century, the priors, closely subordinated to their convent, were simple monks delegated by the abbot of Saint-Savin to reside at Notz and promote the spiritual influence of the abbey there. In the 17th century, Notz became a simple priory in commendam where the priors no longer resided. In 1791, the domain was sold as national property. The chapel of Saint-Antoine is an interesting witness to this past. Dating probably from the founding of the priory, it would have been built shortly after 1228. It probably served for worship until the eve of the Revolution. In the 19th century, the chapel was converted into a cellar. The two gables and the two lateral walls were raised. The small bell tower that dominated the roof was demolished. Inside, the walls, arches and vaults are decorated with murals, standing out against an ochre-red grid that simulates stone or brick joints. They were executed probably around 1500. They represent Christ in majesty surrounded by the tetramorph, the beheading of a martyr, Saint-George slaying the dragon. The painting representing Saint-Christopher may date from the 15th century.
