The church and castle would have been a priory which depended on the abbey of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers. A monastic establishment is attested in 1217. At the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century, the priory dwelling was transformed into an abbatial residence and fortified. The castle consisted of a central body flanked by four corner towers and can be dated to the 14th and 15th centuries. The south-west tower was demolished. The upper levels of the dwelling were razed. At the end of the 19th century, a building was added to the southern part. The abbey of Saint-Cyprien does not appear to have maintained its priory at Lurais beyond the beginning of the 17th century. In 1700, the castle became a farm. Sold as national property at the Revolution, the property was broken up in the 19th century.
