Une tradition attribue la construction de la forteresse à Hugues le Brun, sire de Lusignan, comte de la Marche de 1180 à 1208. A la Révolution, la place présentait un fossé cerné d'une enceinte complétée d'ouvrages avancés. Un pont-levis accédait à une porte ogivale à double herse, défendue par une tour à mâchicoulis et meurtrières. Dans la cour s'élève le donjon de sept étages dont l'accès se fait à plusieurs mètres au-dessus du sol. Le logis seigneurial carré était flanqué d'une échauguette ronde à chaque angle et occupait la partie sud de l'enceinte. L'intérieur s'ornait de peintures murales. Des communs étaient adossés à l'enceinte.

History
A tradition attributes the construction of the fortress to Hugues le Brun, sire de Lusignan, count of la Marche from 1180 to 1208. At the Revolution, the fortification presented a moat surrounded by an enclosure completed with outworks. A drawbridge led to an ogival door with double portcullises, defended by a tower with machicolations and arrow slits. In the courtyard rises the keep of seven storeys whose access is at several metres above ground level. The square seigneurial dwelling was flanked by a round turret at each corner and occupied the southern part of the enclosure. The interior was decorated with wall paintings. Outbuildings were set against the enclosure.
