L'abbaye de Massay possédait un prieuré à La Berthenoux, fondé au 9e siècle et incendié en 1171, constituant un fief ecclésiastique. Le prieuré fut fortifié aux 14e et 15e siècles pour se protéger contre les Anglais. Pendant la Ligue, les partisans de Henri de Navarre, commandés par le comte d'Arquian, en firent le siège et s'en emparèrent en 1560. Le prieuré et ses terres furent vendus comme biens nationaux en 1791. Deux des trois tours édifiées au 15e siècle existent encore, la troisième ayant été arasée. Les tours sont reliées par une courtine longeant les douves.

History
The abbey of Massay owned a priory at La Berthenoux, founded in the 9th century and burned in 1171, constituting an ecclesiastical fief. The priory was fortified in the 14th and 15th centuries to protect against the English. During the League, supporters of Henri of Navarre, commanded by the count of Arquian, besieged it and took possession of it in 1560. The priory and its lands were sold as national property in 1791. Two of the three towers built in the 15th century still exist, the third having been razed. The towers are connected by a curtain wall bordering the moats.
