The castle was undoubtedly built in the 12th century. In the 14th century, it was completed with fortifications by Louis de Culant, grand admiral of France. From the 16th century onwards, the building became the property of the d'Albret family, then that of Sully who sold it to Henri de Condé in 1603. The castle was sold as national property at the Revolution. The defensive quadrilateral that the castle-fort comprised is today reduced to the main dwelling bordering the ravine. This building was the only one that contained habitable rooms, the three other sides which framed the inner courtyard surviving only as foundation walls transformed into fences and garden partitions. The main dwelling is flanked by three towers with hoardings on the exterior and three rectangular projections containing staircases and extending towards the inner courtyard.
