Castle constructed from 1500 on the initiative of Jean de Cardaillac, abbot of Belleperche, remodelled in the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1572, the abbey of Belleperche having been sacked by the Huguenots, the monks who escaped the massacre took refuge in the castle. Of rectangular plan with a return wing, the castle presents four levels, but this building does not seem to correspond to the original one. The transformations caused it to lose its machicolated cornice, its upper storey (destroyed during the Revolution) as well as its towers. The plan was modified several times. Interest is focused on the quality of the architectural and decorative work of the staircase with four straight flights. This monumental staircase consists of four short straight ramps turning around a central square and hollow mass, vaulted with ribs. Treated in a monumental fashion, this staircase is one of the very first manifestations of an Italian-style staircase reflecting the early signs of the Renaissance in the region. The rooms are provided with French ceilings and fireplaces with broad moulded bands. The first level is occupied by large round-arched vaults and a small room vaulted with ribs in brick and stone, resting on corbels with vegetable decoration or human figures.
