Historique

History
Villa Massey had been commissioned from the architect Jean-Jacques Latour in 1852 to serve as a residence. The death of Massey in 1852 led to the modification of the project into a museum. It is a construction in bricks on two storeys with symmetrical façade. A tower crowns the whole. This tower presents a very skillful example of the use of brick. The English garden had been laid out by Placide Massey in 1850, then director of the parks and gardens of Versailles and Saint-Cloud. The garden is centred on the museum. It comprises, in front of the museum, an esplanade with a small pool. A small lake occupies the eastern part of the garden. The perimeter of the garden features metal railings dating from the construction. This garden contains very rare essences, if not unique. Around 1870 the orangery was built, metalwork architecture of Napoleon III style which has undergone no modification since its construction. This greenhouse comprises two wings distributed from a central hall surmounted by a glass dome. The floor of this hall is covered with a mosaic. The metal structure is composed of a series of arcades and decorative motifs constituting an excellent example of Napoleon III metalwork architecture.
