Historique
En 1499, l'église du Mercadal est élevée au rang de cathédrale. Cet édifice est la première église de la ville construite au 12e siècle. Il n'en subsiste actuellement que le portail roman et les chapiteaux historiés. Au 13e siècle, l'église est agrandie. Il ne reste de cette intervention que le clocher-porche. La cathédrale est en partie détruite entre 1557 et 1577. En 1662 début la reconstruction avec intégration des parties sauvées. L'édifice se compose d'une nef unique avec chapelles, terminée par un chevet à cinq pans. A la Révolution, l'église sert d'entrepôt pour les fourrages de l'armée. Divers restaurations sont entreprises au cours du 19e siècle, après le rétablissement du siège (choeur, clocher et toitures de 1833 à 1875, abside et transept de 1851 à 1863...). Le maître-autel est construit entre 1838 et 1847.

History
In 1499, the church of the Mercadal was elevated to the rank of cathedral. This building is the first church in the town constructed in the 12th century. There remain of it today only the Romanesque portal and the historiated capitals. In the 13th century, the church is enlarged. There remains of this intervention only the porch tower. The cathedral is partly destroyed between 1557 and 1577. In 1662 the reconstruction begins with integration of the saved parts. The building consists of a single nave with chapels, terminated by a chevet with five sides. At the Revolution, the church serves as a warehouse for the army's forage. Various restorations are undertaken during the 19th century, after the re-establishment of the see (choir, bell tower and roofs from 1833 to 1875, apse and transept from 1851 to 1863...). The high altar is constructed between 1838 and 1847.
