Historique

History
The church of Saint-Blaise is built on the site of the former Merovingian basilica Sainte-Croix, destroyed in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th. In the 16th century, the chapel of Saint-Michel becomes the church of Saint-Blaise. It is enlarged from 1672 to 1714. Built to meet the needs of wealthy spa visitors, housing the Black Virgin, Notre-Dame des Malades, which is the subject of a pilgrimage, proves too small. Antoine Chanet and Jean Liogier build from 1925 to 1931 the new church of Notre-Dame-des-Malades, adjoining the church of Saint-Blaise and communicating with it via the ambulatory. Surmounted by an immense dome covered with copper which covers a circular nave, it is built in reinforced concrete. Its square bell tower, 67 m high, is not completed until 1956. The interior decoration, executed by the Mauméjean brothers, surprises by the richness of the materials used (chancel in marble and steel, altar and ambos in onyx, stalls in mahogany), the quality of their execution (mosaic, wood and enamel marquetry) and the modernity of the lines and graphic design evoking Art Deco. The choir is covered with a continuous barrel vault adorned with mosaics illustrating the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The pillars with capitals are covered with painted stucco in lapis lazuli fashion. The dome is adorned with a mosaic which illustrates various episodes of sacred history around the representation of the Trinity. The chapel of the baptismal fonts is also adorned with a mosaic representing the baptism of Clovis.
