The bishops of Le Puy, counts of Velay, fortified their town with a double enclosure, one surrounding the town, the other called the "enclosure of the cloister" protecting the cathedral and the episcopal palace. The Pannessac tower is part of the first enclosure. The Saint-Georges gate is part of the second. It affords passage to the street of the same name. There remains a course of very large blocks, perhaps Roman, which are found at approximately two metres above ground level. On one of the sides, a postern affords access to the old ground level also indicated by the location of the sentry boxes. The thickness of the rampart is approximately 1.30 m. In the interior, a row of corbels carrying slabs increases the width of the sentry walk. The width of the gate is 3.22 metres. This structure was built in 1237.
