History

Remarkable example of a 16th-century dwelling, the building was probably the residence of the intendant of Polignac whose important fortress is visible a few kilometres away. The volume and general lines are, on the exterior, of the utmost simplicity, embellished at a few points with rudimentary decoration. The garden which surrounds it still possesses its old walls which flank it on a rectangular plan, as well as the old staircase which crosses it on its principal axis. The building is erected on the classical plan of dwellings of this period, a central staircase with return flights giving access to rooms placed on either side. Paintings in grisaille ornament it. All the interiors must have been painted and decorated. Important remains of them subsist. The former chapel preserves vaults ornamented with more recent paintings (18th century) representing in each spandrel prelates and biblical figures. On its walls, remains of scenes from the Gospels are still well preserved. Particularly curious is the decoration of the dining room, representing naively a false wainscoting.
