Entre le premier et le second étage d'un immeuble reconstruit aux 18e et 19e siècles, une peinture murale représentant Saint-Christophe occupe le revers d'une ouverture romane aveuglée au 14e siècle et transformée en niche. L'explication serait que la figuration de ce saint, invoqué contre la Grande peste, aurait été placée comme protection contre la contagion. Elle témoigne des nombreuses épidémies de peste en Auvergne au 14e siècle et montre comment les populations tentaient de se prémunir contre ce fléau, une des solutions étant de boucher les ouvertures et d'y peindre une image prophylactique. La peinture date du 14e siècle et s'inspire d'un manuscrit anglais conservé à Cambridge. La représentation est très proche de la seule peinture de ce saint connue en Auvergne, située à Billom.

History
Between the first and second floors of a building reconstructed in the 18th and 19th centuries, a mural painting representing Saint Christopher occupies the inner face of a Romanesque opening blinded in the 14th century and converted into a niche. The explanation would be that the depiction of this saint, invoked against the Great Plague, was placed as protection against contagion. It testifies to the numerous plague epidemics in Auvergne in the 14th century and shows how populations attempted to protect themselves against this scourge, one of the solutions being to block openings and paint a prophylactic image upon them. The painting dates from the 14th century and is inspired by an English manuscript preserved at Cambridge. The representation is very close to the only known painting of this saint in Auvergne, located at Billom.
