Historique

History
The viaduct was built by the establishments CAIL (French company for metal construction) to allow the line Volvic/Lapeyrouse to cross the valley of the Sioule. This establishment, competitor of the Eiffel company, realised this project on the model of that of Tardes, made by Eiffel in 1883. The structure, of so-called "mixed" type, comprises a straight metal deck resting on two masonry piers forming three bays. The piers of rectangular plan and diminishing in section towards the top, are crowned with a row of consoles imitating machicolations. The metal deck is constituted of a two-level truss girder whose main beam rests on the piers by means of raised pads. A pedestrian footbridge exists at the lower level, to which a trapdoor gives access. To the south, the viaduct joins the flank of the valley by means of a masonry abutment hollowed with an arch. To the north, a pier and a deck reproduce in reduced form the structure of the main bays. A masonry abutment terminates the structure.
