Historique

History
Church of the 11th and 12th centuries, in Auvergnat style, composed of a narthex with a gallery above, a nave with barrel vault and aisles topped by galleries, two transepts with oriented semicircular chapels, a choir terminated by a semi-dome and aisles flanked by three radiating chapels. The crossing is covered by a dome with pendentives, and surmounted by an eight-sided bell tower with a spire in tuff (upper parts of the bell tower and spire remade in the 19th century). Sculpted capitals (vegetative or historiated decoration, drawn from the New Testament, the Apocalypse and the legend of Saint-Nectaire).£Saint-Nectaire played a decisive role in the evangelisation of Auvergne, and died in the 3rd century. A priory, dependent on the abbey of la Chaise-Dieu, was built on his tomb around the middle of the 12th century. In 1146, the territory of Saint-Nectaire was given to la Chaise-Dieu by Guillaume VII, count of Auvergne. The church of Saint-Nectaire can be considered as one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Auvergne, bringing to a degree of perfection the art of the combination of volumes.
