Cette fontaine fut adossée à l'emplacement des anciennes fortifications de la ville. De 1773 à 1776, les remparts furent démolis et les tours fortifiées qui marquèrent chaque porte furent alors remplacées par des piliers ornés de pilastres amortis en boule. La fontaine fut adossée à la nouvelle porte de Mozac. Le nom de "crapaud" vient du masque par lequel jaillit l'eau, mais il pourrait également s'agir de rappeler l'existence, à la fin du 18e siècle, d'un élevage de grenouilles rue Gomot.£La fontaine, édifiée par Claude François Attiret, se compose d'une grande arcade délimitant une niche concave. L'ensemble baigne dans un bassin rectangulaire alimenté par l'eau jaillissante de deux masques grimaçants plaqués sur chaque piédroit de l'arcade. Cette dernière présente une face unie, ornée seulement de deux moulures saillantes à hauteur d'imposte et de corniche, et formant une sorte de faux-attique. La niche est voûtée en coquille. Son trompillon est sculpté en tête de crapaud. Cet édicule, inspiré d'autres réalisations néo-classiques de Franche-Comté, est unique en Auvergne.

History
This fountain was placed against the site of the old fortifications of the town. From 1773 to 1776, the ramparts were demolished and the fortified towers which marked each gate were then replaced by pillars ornamented with pilasters capped with spheres. The fountain was placed against the new gate of Mozac. The name "toad" comes from the mask through which the water spurts, but it could also be a matter of recalling the existence, at the end of the 18th century, of a frog farm on rue Gomot. The fountain, built by Claude François Attiret, consists of a large arch delimiting a concave niche. The whole bathes in a rectangular basin fed by water spurting from two grimacing masks applied on each jamb of the arch. The latter presents an even face, ornamented only by two projecting mouldings at the height of the impost and cornice, and forming a kind of false attic. The niche is vaulted in shell form. Its squinch is carved in the head of a toad. This small edifice, inspired by other neoclassical creations of Franche-Comté, is unique in Auvergne.
