En 1777, les officiers municipaux décidèrent de faire élever un ouvrage à l'emplacement de la porte de Layat des anciens remparts. En 1779, les remparts sont démolis. History
In 1777, the municipal officers decided to have a structure erected at the location of the Layat gate of the old ramparts. In 1779, the ramparts were demolished. The architect Attiret de Mannevil was entrusted with drawing up the plans and overseeing the works. The stones resulting from the destruction of the ramparts were reused in the new construction, the work of which lasted four years. Three retaining walls, one central and two lateral, constitute the structure. The staircase comprises two double flights: a first double flight with parallel ascents; a second double flight with divergent ascents, separated from the first by two landings flanking the fountain situated at the centre of the composition.
