Le Terrail était un lieu de passage très fréquenté au Moyen-Age, tirant son nom d'un marché aux céramiques, la "terraille", qui s'y tenait régulièrement. En 1598, Etienne de la Barge proposa de financer la construction d'une fontaine. Un traité fut passé, mais le projet ne fut pas exécuté. En 1602, une fontaine fut édifiée, puis remaniée en 1684. La fontaine comporte un bassin circulaire et un fût central. Le bassin est décoré au blason de la ville dans une couronne de feuillages et de la devise de l'Auvergne sur une banderolle. Au-dessous de l'écusson se trouvait le millésime dont il ne reste que deux chiffres (16). Le fût central repose sur une pierre d'assise carrée et est terminé par une demi-sphère couverte d'écailles imbriquées. Quatre niches ont été creusées à la partie supérieure, abritant quatre enfants nus représentant les génies des eaux. Ils sont assis sur des dauphins et trois d'entre eux ont chacun un pied sur un escargot. Les têtes des dauphins, d'où jaillissent les jets d'eau, reposent sur des coquillages.

History
Le Terrail was a very frequently used passage during the Middle Ages, taking its name from a ceramics market, the "terraille", which was held there regularly. In 1598, Etienne de la Barge proposed to finance the construction of a fountain. A treaty was drawn up, but the project was not executed. In 1602, a fountain was built, then altered in 1684. The fountain comprises a circular basin and a central shaft. The basin is decorated with the town's coat of arms within a wreath of foliage and the motto of Auvergne on a banner. Below the escutcheon was the date of which only two figures remain (16). The central shaft rests on a square foundation stone and is terminated by a half-sphere covered with overlapping scales. Four niches have been carved in the upper part, sheltering four naked children representing the genii of the waters. They are seated on dolphins and three of them each have a foot on a snail. The heads of the dolphins, from which the water jets spurt, rest on shells.
