Deserted until the 17th century, the island becomes with Vauban one of the strategic points of the coast to protect the Saint-Malo peninsula from English attacks. La Conchée was fortified by Vauban from 1692 to 1695. It was one of the first works built on a rock covered by the sea. There was a furnace for heating cannonballs. The fort follows the shape of the island. At the level of the underground passages are found the guardhouse, the quarters of the gunners, the food stores, the wood, the powder as well as the chapel and the prison. Officers' quarters are located at the level of the platform. The great terrace is bordered by parapets pierced with embrasures for cannons. At the lower level, a set of vaulted rooms allowed cannons to fire at water level.
