The first fortifications of the walled town of Concarneau were created to protect the monastery dependent on the abbey of Landévennec which had established itself there in the 7th century. First erected in wood, they were gradually built in stone, then completely redone during the 15th century to adapt them to artillery. Some modifications were made in the course of the 17th century: creation of the ravelin and the half-moon in the first half of the century, then, under Vauban, adaptation of the fortifications to the progress of artillery, by decapitating the towers to install artillery platforms there. The present ramparts have remained practically in the state they were in at that time.
