Historique
Place forte remontant à des temps anciens et ayant connu divers appelations (Castrum Moncontorium ; Mons Consularis ; Mons Contoris ; Moncontour). Le tracé de l'enceinte actuelle remonte aux 11e et 12e siècles, mais l'origine de la forteresse est antérieure. L'ouvrage a subi d'importants travaux au 14e siècle, et plusieurs interventions ultérieures. La tour de l'ouest date du 13e ou 14e siècle. La tour Mognet, assise en partie sur celle de l'ouest, date de 1400. Au départ, l'enceinte n'avait qu'une porte pour les véhicules. A la fin du 14e siècle, ouverture d'une porte flanquée d'une tour, et formée de deux passages, pour piétons et voitures. Tour d'environ 10 mètres de diamètre d'où part la muraille qui la reliait anciennement à celle du donjon.

History
Stronghold dating back to ancient times and having had various names (Castrum Moncontorium; Mons Consularis; Mons Contoris; Moncontour). The layout of the present enclosure dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, but the origin of the fortress is earlier. The structure underwent significant works in the 14th century, and several subsequent interventions. The western tower dates from the 13th or 14th century. The Mognet tower, partly set upon that of the west, dates from 1400. Initially, the enclosure had only one gate for vehicles. At the end of the 14th century, opening of a gate flanked by a tower, and formed of two passages, for pedestrians and vehicles. Tower of approximately 10 metres in diameter from which springs the wall that formerly linked it to that of the keep.
