Le télégraphe Chappe, système de télégraphie aérienne, a fonctionné de 1794 à 1844, date de l'adoption du télégraphe électrique. La première ligne créée fut celle de Paris à Lille qui comprenait 16 postes et transmettait un signal en deux minutes. La seconde fut celle de Paris à Brest dont le projet, dû à Therouart fut remis et approuvé en 1794 ; elle était jalonnée de deux lieues en deux lieues. Le poste du Trou d'Enfer est le quatrième à partir de Paris. Il s'agit d'une tour carrée à trois étages, percée de fenêtres.

History
The Chappe telegraph, a system of aerial telegraphy, operated from 1794 to 1844, the date of the adoption of the electric telegraph. The first line created was that from Paris to Lille which comprised 16 stations and transmitted a signal in two minutes. The second was that from Paris to Brest, the design of which, due to Therouart, was submitted and approved in 1794; it was marked out at two-league intervals. The Trou d'Enfer post is the fourth from Paris. It is a square tower with three storeys, pierced with windows.
