La place du Caire a été ouverte, ainsi que la rue et le passage du même nom, en 1799, un an après la prise du Caire par Bonaparte, sur l'emplacement du couvent des Filles-Dieu, supprimé en 1790. History
The Place du Caire was opened, along with the street and passage of the same name, in 1799, one year after Bonaparte's capture of Cairo, on the site of the convent of the Filles-Dieu, suppressed in 1790. The building (appearing on the archaeological plan sheet no. 25 IV AG 8) has at ground level the entrance to the Passage du Caire and was therefore probably built at the same time. The façade on the square offers both reminiscences of Gothic architecture and arrangements inspired by Egyptian art. The Neo-Egyptian decoration is found on the square and features Hathor heads and a frieze with scenes of chariots, warriors and cartouches.
