Ayant appartenu initialement à l'abbaye de Murbach ; usurpé par les comtes de Ferrette, il fut assiégé vers 1279 par les sires de Ribeaupierre, à qui il échut en 1291 par jugement de Rodolphe de Habsbourg. Avant leur mise à jour à l'occasion de fouilles menées en 1959, les vestiges du château de Meywihr, mamelon circulaire de 66 m de diamètre entouré d'un fossé, ont été considérés en 1946 comme ceux d'un fortin de l'époque franque. Au centre du tertre formé par des débris du château les fouilles ont relevé la base d'un donjon carré de 8 m de côté, conservé sur moins de 2 m de hauteur. Constitués d'assises régulières de moellons en grès, calcaire et granit, les murs épais de plus de 2 m ont été dégagés jusqu'au deux assises inférieures qui constituent les fondations primitives. Les chaînes d'angle présentent un appareil soigné de pierres à bossages, dont le liseré assez large situe la construction du château à la fin de l'époque romane. Il est en ruines depuis le 13e siècle.

History
Having originally belonged to the abbey of Murbach; usurped by the counts of Ferrette, it was besieged around 1279 by the lords of Ribeaupierre, to whom it fell in 1291 by judgment of Rudolf of Habsburg. Before their uncovering on the occasion of excavations conducted in 1959, the remains of the castle of Meywihr, a circular mound 66 m in diameter surrounded by a ditch, were considered in 1946 to be those of a stronghold of the Frankish period. At the centre of the mound formed by debris of the castle the excavations revealed the base of a square keep 8 m on a side, preserved to less than 2 m in height. Composed of regular courses of rubble stone in sandstone, limestone and granite, the walls over 2 m thick were cleared down to the two lower courses which constitute the original foundations. The corner chains present carefully worked stonework of bossed stones, whose fairly wide edging places the construction of the castle at the end of the Romanesque period. It has been in ruins since the 13th century.
