The old Fort Kronprinz is built around 1875 during the period of the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine and forms part of the entrenched camp of Strasbourg. Used during the Second World War as a prison, the chapel is decorated in 1944 by Yugoslav prisoners of war (mainly the painters Pavle Vasic and Stanislav Belosanski) who were inspired by the wall paintings of Serbian monasteries of the Middle Ages. The building, damaged by an explosion in 1952, currently houses a university centre (the faculty of primatology).
