Historique
Construite à l'emplacement de l'ancien château fort des rois de Navarre, la citadelle domine la ville protégée par des murailles. Édifiée au 17e siècle sur les plans d'Antoine de Ville, suite au contexte de guerres de religion et de conflits franco-espagnols, elle est ensuite remaniée par Vauban en 1685. Les divers bâtiments (logement royal, chapelle, casernements et arsenaux) , s'ils ne datent pas exactement de l'époque Vauban mais d'une période légèrement postérieure, ont cependant été exécutés fidèlement selon les plans de l'ingénieur, constituant ainsi un ensemble de premier ordre. Garnison militaire jusque dans les années 1920, elle abrite aujourd'hui le collège public.

History
Built on the site of the former stronghold of the kings of Navarre, the citadel overlooks the town protected by walls. Built in the 17th century on the plans of Antoine de Ville, following the context of wars of religion and Franco-Spanish conflicts, it was subsequently remodelled by Vauban in 1685. The various buildings (royal quarters, chapel, barracks and arsenals), if they do not date exactly from the Vauban period but from a slightly later period, were nevertheless executed faithfully according to the engineer's plans, thus constituting an ensemble of the first order. A military garrison until the 1920s, it today houses the public secondary school.
