Historique

History
The lordship is attested from 1080, under English suzerainty. In 1257, the Bayonne bargemen set fire to the building, which is rebuilt in the second half of the 13th century. In 1444, the lordship frees itself from English tutelage and passes under that of the King of Navarre. In 1485, it is ceded to the Gramont family for the first time, then definitively in 1534. Since 1523, after the destructive raid by Spanish troops, the castle has been in ruins. The building consists of a square building or keep, subsequently enclosed within a rectangular enclosure which opens to the east by a square tower-gate. The seigneurial main dwelling of square plan occupies the north-west corner of the courtyard while to the north-east there remain some vestiges of secondary buildings. Defence was ensured solely from the top of the curtain walls by a device of which part of the internal corbels remains. A portcullis and a drawbridge completed the device. In the entrance tower, the guardroom on the first storey communicated directly with the wall-walk. The second storey, on a floor, was covered with a light rib vault with brick voussoirs marking the 15th century, the period of a partial remodelling of the castle. In the keep, the second storey was intended for residence. A bastioned work came to reinforce the north-west side in the 16th century.
