Historique

History
The site was said to have belonged, since 1630, to Monsieur de Portau, lay abbot of Gelos. The property was resold to the Baron de Duplaa who had built in 1784 the present castle where all the local aristocracy gathered on the occasion of festivities whose splendour gave Gelos the nickname of the "Bearnese Versailles". In 1808, Napoleon stayed there and decided to have the stud farm then installed at Astous transported there. The present building comprises, to the east and west, two pavilions built in the 19th century. The original castle comprises a large central main dwelling substantially set back with respect to the two east and west pavilions. This main dwelling is embellished with a central avant-corps slightly projecting, topped with a triangular pediment. The entrance hall preserves a staircase with its wrought iron grille coming from the Duplaa hotel in Escout at Pau, now destroyed, installed in 1959.
