Historique

History
Church mentioned from the beginning of the 14th century (1302). Bascassan in the 16th century was part of the territory of Alciette. On the old Navarrese charters, it appeared as an important church hosting a confraternity of Jesus and with an income of 600 livres. The chapel was doubtless frequented by pilgrims of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle who passed by this secondary route. Very close by is found an old commandery-hospital. Upon the union with Alciette in 1862, Bascassan lost its title of parish. It opens to the burials of Bascassan and to pilgrimages at Saint Andrew. The church was pillaged at the Revolution of the many donations made by the faithful. Installed apart from the village, the church is surrounded by the cemetery and the nearby holy-water font room. It presents a simple plan formed by a rectangle of approximately fifteen metres in length, flanked by a sacristy to the south. The western façade is surmounted by a porch tower pierced by two bell openings. The ceiling is made of a barrel vault with round arch. Two gilded wooden retables furnish the eastern wall. This ensemble of furnishings, dated to the end of the 16th or 17th century, is accompanied by painted decoration in bright colours, notably adorning the woodwork of the south gallery, the pulpit, the baptismal fonts and the ceiling vault (starry sky on the ceiling, scrollwork and geometric motifs elsewhere).
