Historique

History
The origin of the monastery is unknown. The priory church already existed in 1117, at which date the church and its appurtenances were given to the abbey of la Chaise-Dieu. The priory, which contained twelve monks, fell into complete decline in the 15th century due to mismanagement. At the end of the 16th century, the monks of Saint-Maur re-established monastic discipline there and restored the church and convent, ruined by the Wars of Religion. From the 12th-century church remain the main apse and the north absidiole. It was completed in the 14th century by the construction of the nave. The church must have originally had three naves. Only one survives, rebuilt on the plan of the central nave. By a particular arrangement, the main apse is prolonged by a narrower and non-concentric apse. A chapel to the south must have completed this ensemble. The apse of the sanctuary, vaulted in conch, being very depressed, it was necessary, to unite it to the choir bay through the second hemicycle, to resort to a particular construction: the large hemicycle has no perfect hemispherical vault; to reduce the descent, the vault has been buttressed on a few courses established above the triumphal arch. The ornamentation consists of vegetal forms, protruding heads, real or hybrid animals, scenes with figures. The door opening on the western facade presents a style of the 14th century. A bell tower was raised on a square base, behind the gable, and tapers to an octagon.
