Au Moyen-Age, la ville était fortifiée, entourée de remparts, et administrée par un chapitre de dix chanoines. La tour date de la fin du 13e siècle ou du début du 14e. Elle aurait vraisemblablement été construite par les Anglais. Il en existait trois autres semblables qui ont été complètement démolies ; deux lors des guerres de Religion ; la troisième en 1839. La tour restante, de plan carré, est percée d'un arceau ogival au-dessus duquel se trouve une pièce à peu près carrée. Cette pièce est percée, sur ses quatre côtés, d'une meurtrière. L'une d'elle se trouve sur le mur qui est adossé à la grange du château des anciens seigneurs d'Abadie et de Noguez, château paraissant dater de la Renaissance. La tour devait être autrefois plus élevée qu'elle ne l'est actuellement et devait comporter des créneaux.

History
In the Middle Ages, the town was fortified, surrounded by ramparts, and administered by a chapter of ten canons. The tower dates from the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th. It would have been most likely built by the English. There were three other similar ones which were completely demolished; two during the Wars of Religion; the third in 1839. The remaining tower, square in plan, is pierced by an ogival arch above which is found a roughly square room. This room is pierced, on its four sides, by a loophole. One of them is found on the wall which is adjoined to the barn of the castle of the former lords of Abadie and Noguez, castle appearing to date from the Renaissance. The tower must have formerly been higher than it currently is and must have had crenellations.
