History

This fortified and large grain mill, typical of these buildings in Aquitaine and situated on an important passage point, was in the Middle Ages the property of the abbey of la Réole, then passed to private individuals in the 16th and 17th centuries. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was sold to millers, the Chollets: it comprised on the north bank the great mill of the 14th century and on the south bank a fulling house. After 1824, construction of a small mill attached to this house, then in 1862 a central building connecting the two structures. The boat conveyor, used from 1825 to 1855, was replaced by a lock in 1855. The whole was decommissioned in 1914. A mixture of power and flexibility, its architecture is distinguished by a series of arches in a raised gallery, which doubles and surmounts the usual vaulted watercourses facilitating the evacuation of flood waters. The mill was equipped with a strong battery of wheels with stone-lined basins, whose mechanisms have been removed. On the left bank, between the bank and the mill, a small footway was laid out in the 19th century, to facilitate the passage of river navigation.
