Le réseau des Chemins de Fer économiques de la Gironde, créé à la fin du 19e siècle, s'étendait sur 327km de lignes. L'effectif comprenait à l'origine 38 locomotives à vapeur 030T, à partir de 1931, 27 autorails et en 1946 dix locomotives diésel électriques. Le parc du matériel à marchandises a atteint son effectif maximal de 621 unités en 1925. Pour l'entretien de ce matériel, trois ateliers étaient implantés à Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde, Lacanau et Saint-Symphorien. Ce dernier, le plus important, est le seul qui subsiste. Construit en 1891, il a été définitivement fermé en 1978. Le bâtiment est un vaste atelier de plan rectangulaire, constitué de murs de briques renforcés d'une armature en bois. Une charpente de bois couvre l'ensemble. Le sol est en partie recouvert de pavés en bois de pin. Une voie intérieure avec fosse permettait l'entretien sous abri. Tous les éléments de la transmission par courroie sont encore en place. L'atelier abrite encore un important équipement en machines-outils.

History
The network of the Chemins de Fer économiques de la Gironde, created at the end of the 19th century, extended over 327 km of lines. The workforce originally comprised 38 steam locomotives 030T, from 1931, 27 railcars and in 1946 ten diesel-electric locomotives. The goods stock reached its maximum of 621 units in 1925. For the maintenance of this material, three workshops were established at Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde, Lacanau and Saint-Symphorien. The latter, the most important, is the only one that survives. Built in 1891, it was definitively closed in 1978. The building is a vast workshop of rectangular plan, consisting of brick walls reinforced with a timber frame. A timber roof structure covers the whole. The floor is partly covered with pine wood paving. An internal track with pit allowed maintenance under cover. All elements of belt transmission are still in place. The workshop still houses significant equipment in machine tools.
