L'ancien hôtel des fiacres de la ville fut aménagé en 1805 pour accueillir une fabrique de tabac érigée en manufacture impériale en 1811. En 1824, l'architecte Michel-Jules Bonfin fut chargé de conférer à l'entreprise les attributs convenant à une manufacture d'Etat ; il éleva la grande façade de la place Rodesse. Des agrandissements furent ensuite faits, en 1825 et 1920. Le corps principal présente douze travées sur deux niveaux percées de baies rectangulaires à encadrement saillant, il est précédé d'un avant-corps. La cour intérieure est à péristyle. En 1929, le bâtiment de l'horloge a été surélevé. Cette manufacture qui, à son apogée, employait une main d'oeuvre féminine considérable (1000 femmes sur 1684 salariés en 1877) , s'était spécialisée en 1945, dans la fabrication des cigares. Après la fermeture de la manufacture, les bâtiments ont été désaffectés en 1987 et seule a été sauvegardée la façade Bonfin.

History
The former cab stand building of the city was fitted out in 1805 to house a tobacco factory erected as an imperial manufactory in 1811. In 1824, the architect Michel-Jules Bonfin was tasked with conferring on the enterprise the attributes befitting a state manufactory; he raised the great façade of place Rodesse. Enlargements were subsequently made, in 1825 and 1920. The main body presents twelve bays on two levels pierced with rectangular openings with projecting frames, preceded by a front section. The interior courtyard has a peristyle. In 1929, the clock building was raised. This manufactory which, at its height, employed considerable female labour (1000 women out of 1684 employees in 1877), had specialised in 1945 in the manufacture of cigars. After the closure of the manufactory, the buildings were abandoned in 1987 and only the Bonfin façade was preserved.
