History

The original castle perhaps dated back to the 14th century. At the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century, the old castle was demolished to make way for a new building. The East building, the south wall and two-thirds of the west building date from this period. From the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 18th century, modifications were made which gave the building its present appearance: the ground floor of the east building is partitioned; access to the first floor of the west building is remodelled; the roof of the west building is lowered, the building extended to the north and provided with painted decoration; the north wall and the connecting gallery take their present appearance. The castle was restored in the 19th century and embellished with paintings in 1877. The building, in quadrilateral form, comprises two rectangular and parallel main dwellings connected to the north by a wall topped by a connecting gallery and, to the south, by another gallery to which access is gained from the courtyard by a stone staircase. The buildings are pierced by openings, several with mullions. The East wing is flanked on the courtyard side by a turret. The west main dwelling preserves, on the first floor, painted beams of the 17th century and other traces of painted decoration. This castle is almost the only construction of this type surviving in the Bordeaux agglomeration.
