Historique
Bastide bâtie au cours du 13e siècle, sur un emplacement choisi et d'après un plan arrêté par l'autorité suzeraine. Quatre rues se croisant à angle droit et formant une place à leur intersection, en étaient les artères principales. Des portes fortifiées étaient construites aux extrémités des rues principales et permettaient de pénétrer dans l'enceinte de la ville. Sauveterre a conservé ses quatre portes principales qui ont subi une consolidation en 1888. La porte Saubotte conserve encore son escalier et des salles voûtées. La porte Saint-Léger n'a plus qu'un étage. La porte Lafon ou de la Réole est en partie dérasée. La dernière est dénommée porte Saint-Romain.

History
Bastide built during the 13th century, on a location chosen and according to a plan established by the sovereign authority. Four streets crossing at right angles and forming a square at their intersection were its principal arteries. Fortified gates were built at the ends of the main streets and allowed entry into the town's enclosure. Sauveterre has retained its four main gates which underwent consolidation in 1888. The Saubotte gate still preserves its staircase and vaulted rooms. The Saint-Léger gate has only one storey remaining. The Lafon gate or the Réole gate is partly razed. The last is called the Saint-Romain gate.
