The system of fortifications established in the 17th century based on Vauban's plans was intended to close off access to the Gironde estuary and prevent ships from sailing up the estuary. Fort Médoc was part of this system. Built from 1689 to 1691, its military usefulness was disputed and the building was left unmaintained from the early 18th century onwards. It presents a quadrangular plan flanked at each angle by a bastion linked by curtains. A monumental gateway opens onto a vast courtyard in which various buildings stand. On each side, two rectangular buildings symmetrical to each other serving as barracks, ended by a chapel and a bakery, a powder magazine and two guardhouses and command posts.
