Historique
Le collège des Jésuites de Bordeaux fut le douzième établissement de ce genre créé par l'ordre en France. Vers 1571, François Borgia, général de l'ordre, passant par Bordeaux pour se rendre en Espagne, accepta de fonder un nouveau collège groupé autour de la chapelle de la Madeleine qui lui servirait d'église. L'expulsion de l'ordre fut suivie de son retour et de la création d'une maison professe et d'un noviciat fondé en 1593, mais qui ne fonctionna qu'en 1607. Installés d'abord au prieuré de Saint-James puis dans la maison du Peugue, les Jésuites furent ensuite logés dans un local dépendant de l'église Sainte-Croix en 1611. La construction de la chapelle et de la maison du noviciat fut commencée en 1612. En 1653, les Jésuites firent construire une porte monumentale pour la chapelle avec les armoiries des donateurs. La dissolution de la Compagnie de Jésus eut lieu en 1762. Les immeubles furent mis sous séquestre et acquis en 1766 par la ville qui lotit terrain et maison. L'ensemble fut en partie démoli au début du 19e siècle pour l'ouverture des rues du Noviciat et du Portail. Des vestiges subsistent. Les immeubles du n°7 au n°19 sont d'une grande unité de construction puisqu'ils n'étaient qu'un seul immeuble.

History
The Jesuit college of Bordeaux was the twelfth establishment of its kind created by the order in France. Around 1571, François Borgia, general of the order, passing through Bordeaux to go to Spain, agreed to found a new college grouped around the chapel of the Madeleine which would serve as its church. The expulsion of the order was followed by its return and the creation of a professed house and a novitiate founded in 1593, but which only functioned from 1607. Initially installed at the priory of Saint-James then in the house of the Peugue, the Jesuits were subsequently housed in premises depending on the church of Sainte-Croix in 1611. The construction of the chapel and the novitiate house was begun in 1612. In 1653, the Jesuits had a monumental door constructed for the chapel with the coats of arms of the donors. The dissolution of the Society of Jesus took place in 1762. The properties were placed in sequestration and acquired in 1766 by the city which divided the land and house into lots. The ensemble was partly demolished at the beginning of the 19th century for the opening of the Noviciat and Portail streets. Vestiges remain. The properties numbered 7 to 19 are of great constructional unity since they were only a single property.
