Historique
Valeuil constituait, au 14e siècle, un archiprêtré dépendant du diocèse de Périgueux. L'église eut à souffrir des guerres de Cent ans et de Religion. L'édifice comporte une nef prolongée par une entrée de choeur, suivie d'un choeur semi-circulaire. La nef a perdu sa voûte d'origine qui a été remplacée, à la fin du 17e siècle, par un lambris. Elle devait être partagée en deux travées par un doubleau reposant sur des chapiteaux nus portés par deux colonnes engagées dont seule celle du nord subsiste. L'entrée du choeur est voûtée d'une coupole dont les pendentifs reposent sur des impostes portés par de petits dosserets. Le choeur, voûté en cul de four, comporte sept arcatures aveugles en plein cintre reposant deux par deux sur un chapiteau nu supporté par deux colonnettes séparées par un pilastre. Une travée du choeur, séparée des autres par un arc porté directement par des pilastres, ouvre sur l'entrée du choeur et servait de chapelle seigneuriale à la famille de Champagnac. Le clocher quadrangulaire est percé de quatre ouvertures carrées. A l'origine, la toiture reposait sur une corniche chanfreinée supportée par de petits corbelets sculptés, puis fut surélevée pour concourir à la défense de l'édifice. Dans l'angle sud-ouest, à hauteur de la toiture, un trou de tir à feu prouve que l'église était fortifiée au 14e siècle.

History
Valeuil constituted, in the 14th century, an archpresbyterate dependent on the diocese of Périgueux. The church suffered from the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. The building comprises a nave extended by a choir entrance, followed by a semi-circular choir. The nave lost its original vault which was replaced, at the end of the 17th century, by wainscoting. It must have been divided into two bays by a rib resting on bare capitals borne by two engaged columns of which only the northern one survives. The choir entrance is vaulted with a dome whose pendentives rest on imposts borne by small pilaster strips. The choir, vaulted in a cul-de-four, comprises seven blind arcatures in round arch resting two by two on a bare capital supported by two small columns separated by a pilaster. One bay of the choir, separated from the others by an arch borne directly by pilasters, opens onto the choir entrance and served as a seigneurial chapel for the Champagnac family. The quadrangular bell tower is pierced by four square openings. Originally, the roof rested on a chamfered cornice supported by small sculpted corbels, then was heightened to contribute to the defence of the building. In the south-west corner, at the height of the roof, a gun loop proves that the church was fortified in the 14th century.
