Historique

History
The castle was an important fortress surrounded by curtain walls and turrets. In 1357, the English seized it. During the Wars of Religion, it served as a lair for captain Puymartin, a Catholic leader who retook Sarlat from the Calvinists in 1534. Access to the interior court is by a small gatehouse. The two main dwellings of the 15th and 16th centuries are joined by two towers with machicolations flanked by a pepperbox turret containing a spiral staircase of Saint-Gilles. The older part is terminated by a parapet walk with loopholes for culverins. A great hall preserves a beautiful fireplace and tapestries. Beams painted with stencil work. The wainscoted cabinet which follows is painted in trompe l'oeil with pagan and Christian subjects. These glue paintings, treated as frescoes, should date from the early 17th century.
